Ludwig Mies van der Rohe conceived the design of the Barcelona ottoman along with the Barcelona chair* for the German Pavilion for the World Expo 1929 in Barcelona. The ottoman was used by the Spanish King and Queen at the official opening of the building as a seat. Likewise the Bauhaus designers motto "less is more" Mies van der Rohe's furniture and monuments was planed for the style of modern architecture. Clean lines and simple shapes such as, for example, can also be found at his villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic. The Barcelona ottoman is usually supplemented by a Barcelona chair* and a glass table like the Barcelona table*. In his opinion, the internal and external structure of a building should complement the design of the furniture. Designing the right furniture to its buildings was its consequence.
